ATMOSPHERE
Atmosphere Layers |
Ozone Layer
- Ozone layer is depleted by chloro fluoro carbons (CFCs) mainly emitted by Airconditioners and Refrigerators and it contains chlorine.
- CFCs produce chlorine free radicals, which destroy ozone molecules under chain reaction.
- CFCs once emitted, may remain for hundreds of years in Environment.
- The destruction of ozone layer is more in Arctic and Antarctic Regions.
- HCFCs (hydro chlorofluoro carbons) are substitutes for CFCs and are harmful to ozone.
- Ozone is harmful at lower atmosphere and is a pollutant too, whereas at upper atmosphere it is desirable.
- The Ozone layer thickness is measured in DOPSON unit.
