Biosphere reserves 

Indian Biosphere Reserves
It was started by UNESCO in 1970 under the 'Man and Biosphere' (MAB) Programme.
The First biosphere reserve of the world was established in 1979.
Presently there are 16 existing biosphere reserves in india & out of which 7 have been recognised on world network of biosphere reserves by UNESCO,namely,
  • Nilgiri (2000) ➡ First biosphere reserve of india ➡ Established in 1986 ➡ Tamil Nadu, Kerala & Karnataka. 
  • Sunderbans (2001) ➡ Established in 1989 ➡ West Bengal
  • Gulf of mannar (2001) ➡ Established in 1989 ➡ Tamil Nadu
  • Nanda Devi (2004) ➡ Established in 1988 ➡ Uttarakhand
  • Nokrek (2009) ➡ Established in 1988 ➡ Meghalaya
  • Pachmarhi (2009) ➡ Established in 1999 ➡ Madhya Pradesh
  • Simlipal (2009) ➡ Established in 1994 ➡ Orissa
